Coping has been a process that largely involves feeling sick to my stomach with stress or self-soothing with work. Most of my family is at home with me, and mild daily dramas aside, I am lucky for that. I am keeping in close touch with dear friends who are alone. However, in terms of keeping in touch with the outside world, my inner hermit is having a field day. Obviously, I speak for most artists when I say that long unrestricted days in the studio are what we crave.

I met with rising talent artist Dana James and her mother, veteran NYC artist Lizbeth Mitty, prior to their joint exhibition, “The Thread,” which opened March 15th at M. David & Co. Gallery in Bushwick. It was late February, and the artists were trying to answer the lingering question: Which new works should we display?

The handsome and evocative two-person show currently at M. David & Co. Gallery in Bushwick is the first public exhibition that Lizbeth Mitty and her daughter Dana James have had together. Yet, in retrospect, it seems to have been inevitable. Mitty grew up in Queens, and James was raised in her parents’ loft in TriBeCa, so they are acutely in tune with the perpetual flux of New York. Intrinsic to the work of both artists is the physical process of adding and subtracting. This shared disposition seems to be, at least in part, a product of living where new skyscrapers rise frequently, business ownership often changes hands, and subway lines are periodically re-oriented. Such developments signify growth but also cancellation and loss.

Some artists consider their peers to be like family, but with Lizbeth Mitty and Dana James, it’s literal: the two painters are mother and daughter, and will be joining forces to display their work in a duo exhibition at Bushwick space M. David + Co. this coming Friday. Described as “unapologetic champions of beauty,” Mitty and James both create works that are abstract and colorful, favoring creamy pastels, evocative smudges, and mazelike lines. Of course, though they’re family, their processes differ: Mitty is more inspired by objects found in old scrapyards, while James has a proclivity for cutting up old paintings and making them into new ones.

Described by New York Times critic Ken Johnson as a combination of “painterly verve and hellish beauty”, the work of veteran artist Lizbeth Mitty has long been focused with examining and amplifying the intrinsic abstract beauty of deteriorating or overlooked corners of urban architecture and interiors.
Her latest endeavor ‘The Thread’ is a joint exhibition with her daughter, Dana James on view at M. David & Co. through April 14th. Taking its title from their genetic and psychosocial bond, ‘The Thread’ presents an intergenerational between two contemporary painters with independent practices yet close-knit lives, whose artwork is undeniably influenced by the presence of one another.

One type of trendy online content today can be found under the label “oddly satisfying.” Paint cutting videos, hands poking indents in spheres of colorful slime, objects fitting perfectly into one another, and so on. Imagery like that can be calming to observe, even if you don’t know exactly why. The work of artist Adrian Kay Wong, an LA dweller bringing his work to the Lower East Side beginning Thursday, has a similar feel to it. Smooth diagonal slashes, even squares, symmetrical curves, and more calming geometry abounds in Wong’s paintings, which are graced with bold colors and landscapes populated with desks, lamps, couches, and flowers. They’re simple, they’re impressive, and they’re definitely satisfying.

Contemporary artists and mother/daughter team Lizbeth Mitty and Dana James are pleased to announce The Thread, a joint exhibition featuring new works from each artist. The show derives its title from their genetic and psychosocial bond, and their mutual experience as women in the art world. Hailing from successive generations with contrasting cultural landscapes, Mitty and James simultaneously diverge and overlap in subject matter they address, while employing antipolar visual linguistics. The artists are closely aligned in their process-driven approaches, and each serves as the other’s most honest and consistent critic. ‘The Thread’ is an intergenerational dialogue between two artists of markedly different aesthetics, whose close-knit familial bond is channeled through technique and modus operandi.
